Julie Peterson Goonan, born in Palo Alto, California was always interested in art, ever since her mother would give her blank paper instead of coloring books. Her ties to the Central Coast began with spending many summers at her Aunt Mary’s beach house in Cayucos. Her parents retired in Morro Bay and her sister is a local photographer who resides in Los Osos.
Julie sold her first large painting while still in high school, through a local interior designer. She graduated from the San Francisco Academy of Art with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration. After graduating she went on to set up her freelance business, specializing in greeting cards, wrapping paper, poster and t-shirt design as well as editorial and advertising art.
Julie won a San Francisco Cable Car Award for her Hawaiian Ginger poster, an Art Directors Club award for her cover of the Any Mountain ski shop trade publication as well as a National Restaurant award for Outstanding Menu Design.
Julie taught at the San Francisco Academy of Art, California College of Arts and Crafts, Sacramento State University as well as a class at the Universite’ du Quebec a Montreal.
After years of doing Illustration work, Julie leased a space in a studio of Fine Artists. This is where she fell in love with painting again. She sold many large watercolor pieces to private collectors as well as permanent collections of Kaiser Permanente Hospitals, Nordstrom Department store and more.
She’s had shows at Stanford University, Belcher Street studios, 555 Bush Street, San Francisco as well as many Open Studios.
“I really have enjoyed painting on surfboards. They make a wonderful canvas and I get nostalgic for the Ocean and all of it’s wonders.”
